Federico Paternina Reserva

18.95

In 1896 Federico Paternina founded the now famous Rioja bodega in Ollauri in the heart of the Rioja Alta region. Acquisitions followed, including that of the Catholic Farmers Co-operative based in Haro in 1922. In 1998 the company was floated on the Spanish Stock Exchange. The main bodega remains in Haro, the epicentre of Rioja production and combines the very best of the modern and the traditional. Well-equipped cellars incorporate some of the latest technology along with tried and tested practices, including a vast barrel ageing cellar, described as a ‘cathedral of wine’, that contains nearly 50 000 barrels of gently ageing wine. A few miles away are the labyrinthine old cellars in Ollauri which are still used to mature Paternina’s Reserva. The 2005 Federico Paternina Banda Roja Rioja Reserva begins with aromas of blackberry, raspberry (and really just a lot of different berries) plus some cedar notes and a little vanilla. The wine tastes nice and smooth with a good rich texture. This is a really nice wine with lots of fruit plus some light tannins. A little spice on the oaky finish offers good counterbalance to all the fruit.
