Federico Paternina Gran Reserva
€23.95
In 1896 Federico Paternina founded the now famous Rioja bodega in Ollauri in the heart of the Rioja Alta region. Acquisitions followed, including that of the Catholic Farmers Co-operative based in Haro in 1922. In 1998 the company was floated on the Spanish Stock Exchange. The main bodega remains in Haro, the epicentre of Rioja production and combines the very best of the modern and the traditional. Well-equipped cellars incorporate some of the latest technology along with tried and tested practices, including a vast barrel ageing cellar, described as a ‘cathedral of wine’, that contains nearly 50 000 barrels of gently ageing wine. A few miles away are the labyrinthine old cellars in Ollauri which are still used to mature Paternina\’s Reserva and Gran Reserva wines in the very best conditions. The house style is medium weight with the emphasis on elegance and balance and they are especially good with food.
A true Gran Reserva style aged for 30 months in barrel. Drinking superbly right now, delicately toasty with inviting fig, spice and leather notes and smooth tannins.
